This time, he'll be representing the Philippines at the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF) World Youth Championships in Abu Dhabi. It's a significant step up for the young athlete, who recently made his mark at the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships in Thailand, where he claimed a silver medal. This achievement further solidifies his status as one of the country's brightest jiu-jitsu prospects.
What makes Gabriel's journey even more remarkable is his background. He's been training under the guidance of renowned coach and Cebu Jiu-Jitsu founder, Niño Castro, since he was just seven years old. This early start and consistent training have clearly paid off, as he now follows in the footsteps of Cebu's most accomplished jiu-jitsu athletes, the sisters Eliecha Zoe and Elise Xoe Malilay, who are both world jiu-jitsu champions in their youth careers.
His preparation for the Abu Dhabi tournament has been meticulous. Gabriel has been training consistently throughout the year, with a focus on strength and conditioning under the guidance of Coach Stanly at Sci Fitness Gym. He's also been part of intensive jiu-jitsu training and camps with his home team, Cebu Jiu-Jitsu, led by Professor Castro. When he's in Manila, he joins the national youth team for weekend training sessions, ensuring he's always at the top of his game.
This isn't Gabriel's only international appearance this year. Cebu's international campaign will continue next month when a larger delegation heads to Cambodia for the Ju-Jitsu Asian Union (JJAU) Southeast Asia Regional Championships. This event will see a strong Cebu contingent, including Jinani Agbayani Jr., Keann Caelo De Los Reyes, Isabelle Rae Ignacio, Kian Riley Ignacio, Duke Enzo Iniaki Lincuna, Keira Dominique Mercado, Clark Jacob Restauro, Zoe Mikayla Sarabosing, Sarah Lee Tio, and Stan Lee Tio, competing across various age groups and weight divisions.
Gabriel's success in these international competitions is a testament to the growing strength of Cebu's jiu-jitsu scene.
