B.C. Sand Sculpting Festival: 'Touched by the Beast' Wins Doubles Category (2026)

The 2026 Quality Foods Sand Sculpting Competition in Parksville, British Columbia, showcased the creativity and talent of sand sculptors from around the world. The festival's theme, 'Beauties and Beasts', inspired artists to create stunning representations of nature and its wonders. Among the impressive entries, Hanneke Supply and Helena Bangert's 'Touched by the Beast' stood out, capturing the essence of the theme. Their sculpture depicted a monster, symbolizing nature's beauty, with a little girl on its lap, emphasizing the importance of connecting with the natural world. Supply, from the Netherlands, explained the concept, highlighting the desire to foster a deeper bond with nature. Bangert, originally from Belgium, shared the challenges of sculpting, particularly the height of their creation. The duo's collaborative process, marked by a playful dance of ideas, resulted in a sculpture that conveyed a powerful message. In the singles category, Abe Waterman's 'Walls' emerged victorious, featuring a bulldozer breaking through a wall, symbolizing the removal of barriers between people. Waterman, from Caledonia, P.E.I., explained the evolution of the sculpture's theme and the challenges of working within the time constraints of the competition. The festival, however, faced an unfortunate incident of vandalism overnight, affecting some of the doubles teams' sculptures. The organizers responded swiftly, deciding to divide the doubles prize money among all participants. The sculptures will be on display until August 16, inviting visitors to vote for the People's Choice Award. This event not only celebrates artistic talent but also emphasizes the importance of environmental awareness and community connection, leaving a lasting impact on both artists and attendees.
